Samsung’s display-making affiliate unveiled the first prototype of a 9.1-inch stretchable OLED panel that bends, folds and rolls at the Society for Information Display 2017 event in the LA Convention Centre. “While current flexible OLED is able to be transformed in only one side, this stretchable OLED can be transformed – whether curved, bended or rolled – in both sides, above and below” a Samsung Display spokesperson told The Korean Herald. Representing the latest and most advanced form of flexible display technology currently available, the new stretchable screen has an array of application. “When pressed, the stretchable display is dented up to 12 millimetres, like a balloon, and then reverts back to its original shape,” the company said. This kind of technology could find it’s use in smartphones, wearable devices, Internet of Things, automobile displays or even clothing. However, the display technology is still in its early stages and may undergo more research and development. As a result, it may take few more years before it goes into mass production and is made commercially available. Meanwhile, at the same conference, Samsung also presented another prototype of a 1.96-inch UHD (ultra-high definition) LCD display that boasts UHD resolution (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) and record pixel density of 2,250 ppi. This could be ideal for virtual reality (VR) headsets or augmented reality headsets and glasses in the coming years.
